[It's vampires like this that make Jonathan truly despise the race. No doubt this 'Lestat' will fit in well with the likes of Ignacio.]

That she abides by a contract that she agreed to, in spite of your barbs, would seem to indicate a strong will to me, sir. Just one that does not suit your purposes or fancy. She is a rebel in her own ways, ones that do not involve betraying the trust of someone she cares for.

She made no requests of me, sir. I came of my own accord as a colleague, and as a man who has dealt with far too many creatures like you.

['I've been watching you all these nights in Whitechapel pretending you're still a doctor,' Mary's voice is cold and cruel in his memory. 'You believe you're just fighting a disease. But it's you, the disease, Jonathan. You!' And every vampire like him.]

I can see by your messages that manners mean little to you, so I will simply say good evening. Perhaps you'll be taught a few lessons about such things here. I think it might do you well.

I said I advised her. Do not twist my words for your petty fit of rage, sir. Seeking the counsel of a friend when dealing with uncertain waters shows wisdom. Something you would seem to lack, by your own admission of repeating your mistakes again and again. Is it jealousy that drives you, then? That she has grace, a backbone, and wisdom.

And your opinions are not the truth. Truth is something objective, based in fact, not something 'as you see it.'

She is a bright and conscientious young woman with a gentle heart that you abused.

And once more you twist my words and my intent. I said you may sample our substitutes to see if they will work. How is that not gathering the facts? I do not presume they will. I make the offer in good faith. Refuse if you will, but do not turn the facts to suit whatever narrative you've dreamed up for yourself.

If you wish to tell your side of this tale, then tell it. By my nurse's account, you tricked her, then grew cruel and hateful when she refused you relations without the consent of her partner.

Created. So you follow the will of your maker? Or do you mean to say you are simply a slave to your instincts? Man has evolved to hunt and kill in packs. And yet, we manage to live beyond our instincts, create things ourselves, master our hunger to eat all sorts of things.

[Reading through the man's account, he can't entirely discount the potential veracity of it. He does not doubt Lucy's word, but he can see how her tender heart might lead her to make assumptions and depending on how Lestat worded things... she might not have realized what he was trying to say.]

And it would seem that you have very poor communication skills. Did you ensure she understood what you were telling her before you drank? Or did you simply assume? She is a gentlelady, a queen in her own world and time. I expect such an offer would have flustered her, and she may not have expressed as carefully as she might her argument for refusing.

[Would that Myrddin had done the same.]

You are not above mankind simply because you are a vampire.

What you are, is a creature of the night with extraordinary abilities. The burden is on you to be clear, not your victims.

I have not been a human for six months, sir. I think I am particularly qualified to dictate how you might live your life while you are here.

[After six months, he is very clearly an expert in all things vampire.]

It is good to know you do not kill the innocent, at least. I will hold you to that. But your mercurial temper still could use adjustment. As could your communication skills.

I do not hate all vampires. Only those who give me cause. It is, admittedly, a significant proportion of the population I have encountered.

[Jonathan bristles.]

I am 35-years-old. I'm hardly a child, however long you've lived for. Humanity is the bigger picture. It is what separates us from beasts.

[He really should not have told this man he's a vampire. He's not addressing Lestat calling him an infant and a child again. It's only going to encourage his needling on that point.]

Humanity is a metaphysical concept, it hardly vanishes simply because one's species changes. It has diminished in you, but you say you only hunt sinners. What would be the reason for that limit save some vestige of your own humanity?

[On the one hand, it's rare for Jonathan to encounter vampires here who acknowledge that they are monstrous creatures. On the other, Lestat is vexing beyond belief.]

I cannot tell if you are self-loathing, to call yourself such things, truly evil, or attempting to needle me for your own amusement, sir. Whatever the case, I believe this conversation is at an end. Good night.
